WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE? TRY 14 NCAA FOOTBALL COACHES

VA Tech yesterday agreed with football coach Frank
Beamer on a new contract worth $1.025M annually, and he
becomes the 14th NCAA football coach with a contract worth
$1M or more, according to USA TODAY's Thomas O'Toole, who
reports that by the end of the year, close to 20 of the 114
Div. I-A football coaches could earn at least $1M. A '97
USA Today survey "could document only two million-dollar
men" in Div. I-A football -- Steve Spurrier and Bobby
Bowden. NCAA Exec Dir Dick Schultz: "Whether you like it or
not, that's what the marketplace is right now" (USA TODAY,
11/28). Beamer's new deal increases his salary by 25% (USA
TODAY, 11/28). VA Tech also increased Beamer's assistant
coaches' salary package by $100,000. Beamer said that the
"enhancement" of the assistants' base salaries "was the
     deal-maker." Additionally, Beamer's contract includes a
bonus provision that will pay him $200,000 when VA Tech
plays in a BCS bowl and $100,000 when it qualifies for a
     non-BCS bowl (VIRGINIAN-PILOT, 11/28).
