A "headless point guard has been seen all over"
billboards and newspaper ads throughout Northeast OH,
according to Chris Tomasson of the AKRON BEACON JOURNAL, who
wrote that while the "'decapitated' ballhandler is supposed
to represent a generic" Cavaliers player, in some of the
images, G Andre Miller's No. 24 is "quite visible" and in
others, Miller's goatee was "not cropped out." Tomasson
wondered, "Why didn't the Cavs just leave Miller's head in
the advertising?" Cavs GM Jim Paxson: "With younger players
like Andre, if you're pushing him, that in some ways can be
a detriment to other members of the team and could affect
the development of Andre. We think we have pretty good
players, but we don't have one or two that you should be
focused on" (AKRON BEACON JOURNAL, 10/29).
OFF THE ICE: In Buffalo, Sharon Lindstedt wrote that
Adelphia Communications is "once again raiding" the Sabres
"bench to star" in ads for its various entertainment and
communications products. Adelphia has "just finished
filming the sequel" to a series of TV ads, which debuted in
October '99, featuring Sabres players in "humorous vignettes
involving" the company's products. Sabres C Stu Barnes and
D Rhett Warrener star in the new ads, along with play-by-
play man Rick Jeaneret and a goal judge. Sabres Owner John
Rigas was "actually the one who suggested expanding the
cast" beyond just players. The ads will begin airing in
Buffalo, as well as in other markets where Adelphia "has a
presence, sometime next month" (BUFFALO NEWS, 10/27).
MONKEY BUSINESS: CBS' Jim Nantz, on the Colts new
promo: "[Marvin] Harrison, [Edgerrin] James and [Peyton]
Manning -- the Triplets -- are hot, but even bigger in
Indianapolis right now [are] the Touchdown and Extra Point
Monkeys" (see THE DAILY, 10/24) ("The NFL Today," 10/29).
