XFL: XFL President Basil DeVito said that the league has
sold 120,000 season tickets "so far and hopes to average
25,000 fans a game" (AP, 10/29). The following are selected
names from the first round of Saturday's inaugural XFL draft:
1) L.A. -- QB Scott Milanovich; 2) Birmingham -- QB Casey
Weldon; 6) S.F. -- RB Vaughn Dunbar; and 8) Chicago -- RB
John Avery (AP, 10/29).
CART: The successor to CART interim CEO Bobby Rahal "may
very well be Chris Pook, founder and longtime promoter" of
the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. Pook is "believed to be
the popular choice and would seem available," as the Long
Beach race was sold several years ago to Dover Downs. Pook
has since been serving as a consultant for the race. A
"field of 20 candidates" to replace Rahal has been "reduced
to eight" (Mike Kupper, L.A. TIMES, 10/29).
WUSA: In Tampa, Bill Ward writes that the WUSA's
"biggest obstacle" of finding facilities in which to play
"likely will force the franchise earmarked for Orlando to
move to Raleigh" for the inaugural season (TAMPA TRIBUNE,
10/30). In L.A., Grahame Jones writes, "Before it commits
itself to San Diego, ... the WUSA might want to reconsider
its" Southern CA location. Orange County would be a "far
better venue" (L.A. TIMES, 10/30). An announced crowd of
7,546 attended the FleetCenter yesterday for the fourth match
of the 12-city Discovery Health Channel Women's Soccer
Challenge. In Boston, Frank Dell'Apa writes that the U.S.
women's soccer players are "accelerating their promotional
efforts toward the WUSA" (BOSTON GLOBE, 10/30).
