NAMES IN THE NEWS

          NFL TO PAY TRIBUTE TO SCHOENFELD: There will be a
     moment of silence in NFL press boxes across the country
     Sunday and Monday in honor of late SportsLine.com Senior
     Writer STEVE SCHOENFELD, who was killed Tuesday evening in a
     hit-and-run automobile accident in AZ.  SportsLine.com
     Senior Writer LEN PASQUARELLI, on Schoenfeld: "Never an ax-
     grinder, he rarely permitted opinion to infringe on
     delivering the facts. ... It is, I promise you, an
     incredible loss for all of us" (CBS SportsLine, 10/25).  NFL
     Commissioner PAUL TAGLIABUE, on Schoenfeld:  "He was an
     insightful reporter, and as hard working and enthusiastic as
     anyone who covered us" (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 10/26).
          NAMES: VENUS and SERENA WILLIAMS "are staging their
     first charity fundraiser" in FL next April, "perhaps in part
     to counter the nasty things JOHN MCENROE says about them." 
     The sisters have also linked-up with tennis entrepreneur
     SARA FORNACIARI, who will handle their fundraising efforts
     "for at least the next three years" (N.Y. POST,
     10/26)....Marlins Owner JOHN HENRY, manager of his
     investment company, John W. Henry & Co., has announced a
     plan to consolidate his firm's operations by closing its
     office in Westport, CT.  Poor performance and investors'
     withdrawal of funds have caused the assets of his company to
     drop from $2.4B a year ago to about $1B today.  Henry, on
     the deadline of divesting his minority stake in the Yankees:
     "I think I've passed that.  Something will probably get done
     in 2001" (N.Y. TIMES, 10/26)....Devils F SCOTT GOMEZ,
     Canadians D SHELDON SOURAY, Coyotes F JEREMY ROENICK, Flyers
     D CHRIS  THERIEN and Lighting G KEVIN WEEKES all guest-
     starred on ABC's "ONE LIFE TO LIVE."  Gomez: "The ratings
     are going to go skyrocketing when this is on TV."  Roenick
     said he "studied" his hair "for the last couple of weeks and
     tried to perfect [it] for this role."  Dir Joe Cotugno:
     "They were attentive, they took notes and they were just a
     pleasure to work with" (ESPN, 10/25).
