MARKETPLACE ROUND-UP

          The Timberland Co. has inked a deal to provide
     waterproof outerwear for CBS Sports' NFL sideline reporters,
     SEC college football announcers and broadcasters on "The NFL
     Today."  As part of the deal, the brand will receive three
     seconds of logo exposure at the end of each NFL and SEC game
     broadcast on CBS, as well as at the end of each broadcast of
     "The NFL Today" (Timberland)....State Farm Insurance has
     signed a four-year deal to title sponsor the Missouri Valley
     Conference's men's basketball tournament (MVC).....PA-based
     PLB Sports VP/Marketing Melissa Heher said that the "most
     popular brands" of cereal flakes around collegiate sports
     teams, which are available on the Internet, are the Univ. of
     NE and the Univ. of MI (DETROIT NEWS, 10/25)....Mirror Image
     Internet has signed on as a "principal sponsor" for the N.Y.
     Marathon.  Mirror Image gets signage, "including center
     position on the finish line banner."  Additionally, Pontiac
     has signed on as the event's official car and will tout its
     Aztec brand (Terry Lefton, BRANDWEEK, 10/23 issue).
          ISLAND BOY: ESPN's "NBA Today" showed Spurs C Tim
     Duncan behind the scenes, filming a commercial for the U.S.
     Virgin Islands.  Duncan: "I think Americans would love
     coming to the [USVI] because it's a paradise.  The water is
     great, the people are great.  It's a change of atmosphere,
     and it's a great change" ("NBA Today," ESPN, 10/24).
