NAMES IN THE NEWS

          FROM THE SHELVES: Two books about Jets President of
     Football Operations BILL PARCELLS were reviewed in the N.Y.
     Times:  The first book, a biography by BILL GUTMAN,
     "PARCELLS: A BIOGRAPHY," and "THE FINAL SEASON," written by
     Parcells with Boston Globe sports columnist WILL MCDONOUGH. 
     Allen St. John concludes that "The Final Season" "offers
     something more" (N.Y. TIMES, 10/22)....In RI, Bill Reynolds
     reviewed the new book by Indiana Univ. Professor Murray
     Sperber titled, "BEER AND CIRCUS, HOW BIG-TIME COLLEGE
     SPORTS IS CRIPPLING UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION."  The book is
     "an indictment on our sports culture, and the ways too many
     schools have genuflected to it" (PROVIDENCE JOURNAL, 10/22).
          NOMAR'S BROKEN HEART: Red Sox SS NOMAR GARCIAPARRA
     appeared on ABC's "TWO GUYS AND A GIRL" where cast member
     SUZANNE CRYER, who plays "Ashley," broke off their
     relationship and becomes the object of Red Sox fans abuse. 
     Garciaparra, during an interview with ABC's AL MICHAELS:
     "I'm considering all my options right now [about leaving the
     Red Sox]."  Michaels: "Aside from the obvious heartache
     involved for Red Sox fans, I understand there was some
     heartache involved for you personally."  Garciaparra,
     fighting back tears: "Yeah, Ashley.  I have her picture
     right here" ("Two Guys And A Girl," ABC, 10/20).
          NAMES: While he recovers from a kidney ailment, Heat C
     ALONZO MOURNING has been offered "an off-court role" with
     the NBA by Commissioner DAVID STERN.  Stern: "There's no
     shortage of opportunities (SUN-SENTINEL, 10/21)....Film Dir
     MICHAEL MANN and producer JON PETERS have reached an
     agreement with Columbia Pictures to make the film "ALI",
     starring WILL SMITH, for $105M.  Mann and Peters will cover
     any budget overruns, and plan to begin shooting in January
     (HOLLY. REPORTER, 10/23)....ET's Julie Moran reported
     BRIDGETTE WILSON and PETE SAMPRAS have returned from their
     honeymoon.  Wilson: "Everyone said wait.  We did it now
     because you never do it later if you say you do.  ... Right
     after the wedding, that's the honeymoon."  Wilson said
     children "will come later.  We're both excited, but in due
     time" ("ET," 10/20).
