AFTER HANDLING IRELAND TALKS, CAN MITCHELL SAVE MARLINS?

          Former U.S. Senator George Mitchell is expected to be
     named to the BOD of the Marlins today, according to Charles
     Elmore of the PALM BEACH POST.  Currently, the team's BOD
     consists of Marlins Owner John Henry and Vice Chair David
     Ginsburg.  Mitchell would be the third member of the BOD,
     and while he will be paid, "the amount is undetermined." 
     Henry, asked if Mitchell would take an active role in the
     team's pursuit of a new ballpark: "I'm sure like all of us
     he'll be involved in that effort."  Meanwhile, Elmore writes
     that Marlins execs "told a group of season-ticket holders
     Wednesday that they expect to lose" $10M this season and
     reiterated "warnings that baseball cannot survive" in South
     FL without a new ballpark (PALM BEACH POST, 9/28).
