FREE THE SNOW CAMPAIGN BEING BACKED BY NIKE SUBSIDIARY

Burton Snowboards is "lending its name and legal
resources to the Free the Snow campaign which began last
winter in its fight against the snowboard bans" at Alta,
Taos and Aspen ski resorts, according to Kathleen Carlson of
the ASPEN DAILY NEWS. Last winter, Nike's ACG "helped fund
the campaign that achieved some momentum locally." ACG
spokesperson Dawn Leonetti said that the company "plans to
remain involved in the Free the Snow campaign," but is
"evaluating what unique and fun ways they might promote
snowboarding access." But Aspen Ski Co. spokesperson Rose
Abello said that the company "will keep its snowboard ban
for the season regardless of the new effort behind the
campaign." Burton VP/Marketing David Schriber, on the ban:
"We're not saying our human rights are being violated, but
it doesn't seem fair to us. If there is some legal status
here, then we'll pursue it" (ASPEN DAILY NEWS, 9/22).
