I HAVE TO SEE THE UNIFORMS! MAGNA CONTEMPLATES HORSE LEAGUE

Magna Entertainment Corp. "is trying to form a
professional league for thoroughbreds where teams of horses
and jockeys from big tracks would race against each other,"
according to Tony Van Alphen of the TORONTO STAR. In an
internal memo, the company "reveals it wants to sell
franchises, hold matches, promote wagering and share
profits" in a National Thoroughbred League (NTL). The memo
calls for "30-horse franchises that compete in a series of
matches and playoffs." The proposal "is for three to four
franchises in an initial summer league, and the same number
for a winter season." Franchise fees will be US$150,000 and
promotion for the league "would direct attention to cities
and jockeys, not horses" (TORONTO STAR, 9/25).
