RUDY WANTS A NEW MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET: PROPOSES STADIUM

N.Y. Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said yesterday that he
"wanted to build" a domed indoor-outdoor arena on the West
Side of Manhattan -- from 30th to 34th Street -- that would
seat "up to 100,000 people for major" concerts, conventions
and sports events, according to Elisabeth Bumiller of the
N.Y. TIMES. Giuliani's plans "were supported" for the first
time by NY Gov. George Pataki, who "controls the agency that
owns the land." Giuliani "left open the possibility ...
that the arena could be used" by the Jets, Yankees, Mets or
for the 2012 Olympics. He also said that he "wanted to
build" the facility "regardless of whether he had
commitments" from the IOC or any of the local teams.
Giuliani: "I'm willing to put together whatever group will
get me that large, domed, indoor arena." Meanwhile, Yankee
reps "embraced the mayor's words," and team spokesperson
Howard Rubenstein said, "It certainly leaves open an option
of a baseball stadium" (N.Y. TIMES. 9/21). Also in N.Y.,
Mahoney, Myers & Blood report that Giuliani met with NFL
Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and Jets Owner Woody Johnson
about the stadium yesterday (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 9/21).
