SHAWN KEMP SUES REEBOK AFTER BEING DROPPED FOR COMMENTS

Blazers F Shawn Kemp filed suit on September 1 against
Reebok Int'l, claiming that the company "wrongfully broke
its endorsement contract with him after" he was quoted in
the Akron Beacon Journal in April as saying that his
"favorite sneakers as a child were made by Nike," according
to Scott Soshnick of BLOOMBERG NEWS. Kemp, who has endorsed
Reebok since '92, made $1.75M annually from the endorsement
deal that was to run through the 2001-02 NBA season. The
suit seeks unspecified damages. In a letter to Kemp, Reebok
stated that it was terminating the deal because "the
comments reported in the Akron Beacon Journal article and
re-reported in the Sports Business Daily on Monday, April
17, 2000 constitute a flagrant violation of your contractual
undertaking to Reebok" (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 9/16).
