USOC TAKES A-I-M AT A-M-I WITH COPYRIGHT USAGE LAWSUIT

The USOC has filed a complaint in federal court seeking
a temporary restraining order to prohibit FL-based American
Media, Inc. (AMI) from continuing to advertise and sell its,
publication, OLYMPICS USA, which is for sale at newsstands
and at grocery stores and contains advertising from non-
Olympic sponsors. The USOC claims the magazine uses the
USOC's trademarks without authorization. Before publishing,
AMI contacted the USOC to request permission to use the
USOC's trademarks in connection with the title, but the USOC
denied the request. AMI also publishes the National
Enquirer and the Globe (USOC). USOC Dir of PR Mike Moran
said that the lawsuit "seeks any money the company earns
from the publication." AMI spokesperson Richard Valvo said
that he "did not immediately know how many copies of the
     publication were distributed" (AP, 9/11).
