NAMES IN THE NEWS

          SPECIAL GUEST: PRESIDENT CLINTON become the first White
     House incumbent ever to attend the U.S. Open when he showed
     up during the men's semifinals on Saturday. Clinton was
     joined by analyst JOHN MCENROE and his wife PATTY SMYTH, and
     Clinton "seemed to regale the gregarious" McEnroe.  CBS timed
     Clinton as talking to McEnroe for 4:41 with McEnroe not
     saying anything.  McEnroe said later, "The president knows a
     lot more about tennis than I knew.  It's a great boost for
     tennis that he came" (Mult., 9/10).  CBS' Mary Carillo, after
     CBS showed McEnroe and his wife sitting with Clinton: "Why
     does that picture make me nervous?" (CBS, 9/9).
          OTHER NAMES: DR. JAMES BARNETT, who served as the
     Magic's team doctor, was killed along with his wife, Melissa,
     on Saturday when their twin-engine airplane crashed in MS
     (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 9/10)....Longtime Chicago Tribune
     marketing columnist GEORGE LAZARUS died on his morning
     commute to work on Friday.  In Chicago, Janega & Jones wrote,
     "[Lazarus'] column, put together through an indomitable force
     of will for 39 years, all but 11 of them at the Tribune, was
     practically Holy Writ for executives in the marketing and
     advertising business in Chicago" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 9/10).
     ...Hawks C DIKEMBE MUTOMBO "is soliciting corporations for
     money to build" his hospital in Kinshasa, the capital of
     Congo.  Mutombo "has canceled his annual dinner fund
     raisers," because he said he "wasn't getting enough of them." 
     The "galas" cost him $100,000 each.  Mutombo: "I wasn't
     getting a break on the hotel rooms or the plane tickets, so
     it was too expensive.  I'm going to do better soliciting
     directly" (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 9/10)....Wizards President
     of Basketball Operations MICHAEL JORDAN attended yesterday's
     Bears-Bucs game as a guest of Bucs DT WARREN SAPP.  Jordan
     watched the game from team Owner MALCOLM GLAZER's suite (ST.
     PETERSBURG TIMES, 9/11).
