Although negotiations will continue, it "appears highly
unlikely" that the Black Coaches Association (BCA) game
between VA Tech and GA Tech -- which was postponed due to a
thunderstorm Sunday night in Blacksburg, VA -- will be
played, according to Mike Harris of the RICHMOND TIMES-
DISPATCH. VA Tech is "willing to play the game later," but
GA Tech "does not want to play." Rick Giles, President of
The Gazelle Group, the BCA game's NJ-based promoter, said
that the organization "had no insurance to cover its losses
in the event of the game's cancellation." Giles said that
the BCA "expected to make" $300,000, but he "couldn't
estimate the potential loss if the game isn't played"
(TIMES-DISPATCH, 8/29). In VA, King & Bogaczyk write that
the BCA, ESPN and VA Tech "confirmed their commitments" to
play the game Friday, December 1, at VA Tech. Giles said
that he "spent much" of Monday on the phone with the NCAA,
from which the BCA "will have to be granted a waiver" to
have the Friday night game televised by either ESPN or
ESPN2. Giles: "The bylaws evidently say a TV game on Friday
must be completed by 7 p.m. Obviously, we prefer to play
the game in primetime" (ROANOKE TIMES, 8/29). In Atlanta,
Norman Arey writes that colleges have "stayed away" from
Friday games in the past because of conflict with high
school games (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 8/29).
