Attorneys for Broncos LB Bill Romanowski sent a letter
to the Editor of Sports Illustrated Tuesday that "demanded
the magazine print a retraction for what they consider to be
false and defamatory statements" about Romanowski, according
to Adam Schefter of the DENVER POST. The letter referenced
the SI article in which an unnamed source accused Romanowski
of "using a racial epithet." SI Senior Publicist Joe Assad
acknowledged receipt of the letter and said, "We are
reviewing it, as we do in all cases like this, and we'll
respond once our review is complete" (DENVER POST, 8/24).
GRIFFEY AND BRENNAMAN SPAR: In Cincinnati, Chris Haft
reports that Reds radio announcer Marty Brennaman and OF Ken
Griffey Jr. "engaged in a brief but spirited verbal clash
before Wednesday night's game, an incident stemming from the
radio announcer's on-air criticism" of Griffey's
performance. Late in the exchange, Brennaman said, "I was
here before you and I'll be here after you." Griffey said,
"No wonder none of the players want to talk to you."
Brennaman said, "That's fine" (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 8/24).
