MARKETPLACE ROUND-UP

          SAG: In Chicago, Mike Kiley cites Cubs RF Sammy Sosa as
     saying that he "turned down commercial work with one of his
     sponsors [Montgomery Ward] so that he wouldn't cross" the
     SAG/AFTRA picket line.  Sosa: "I know my rules.  I respect
     every union" (SUN-TIMES, 8/16).  WinStar Radio's Keith
     Olbermann, on athletes defending their ad work during the
     strike by saying they're not taking jobs away from actors:
     "If the actors are all on strike, are the advertisers more
     likely or less likely to create spots featuring athletes
     who'll ignore the strike?" (WinStar Radio, 8/16). 
          NOTES: MA-based Woolf Associates has created a new
     soccer division, which will focus on player representation
     and marketing.  The unit will be directed by Patrick McCabe,
     who comes to Woolf from Laduma Sports Group, an agency he
     founded in '97 (Woolf)....Toronto-based Roots has unveiled a
     "bucket-style hat in red and white" that Canadian athletes
     will wear at next month's Sydney Games.  Roots' other
     Olympic apparel for the Canadian teams includes "platinum-
     coloured pants, nylon vests and 'hockey-inspired' jerseys." 
     Designer Adrian Aitcheson: "We wanted to design outfits that
     athletes can wear outside the games.  It's a little more
     street-like" (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 8/16).
