The multimillion-dollar "legal tangles surrounding"
Howard Milstein's "failed attempt" to buy the Redskins have
"ensnared" Ravens Owner Art Modell, according to Ken Murray
of the Baltimore SUN. Milstein's company, Washington Sports
Ventures, Inc., yesterday "asked" a federal judge in
Baltimore to "order" that Modell comply with a subpoena
first issued in March. Milstein's attorneys "are seeking"
any records that could indicate whether Modell had contact
with John Kent Cooke about Milstein's efforts to buy the
Redskins in '99. Milstein contends that John Kent Cooke
wanted to buy the team after his father [and former Owner]
Jack Kent Cooke passed away and worked with other owners to
"sabotage" Milstein's bid (Balt. SUN, 8/16)....With three
days of training camp remaining, Cowboys officials estimate
they drew 35,900 fans to their camp in Wichita Falls, TX.
The Cowboys drew about 100,000 in '98 and about 50,000 in
'99 (EXPRESS-NEWS, 8/16)....In SC, David Newton writes that
Panthers Owner Jerry Richardson was "evasive" when asked if
the Redskins' radio network had moved back into the
Carolinas, "violating an unwritten rule in which NFL teams
don't enter" another team's market. Richardson said
smiling: "I'm not sure." Newton notes that the Redskins
will air games this season on 10 radio stations in NC, in
which 19 stations carry Panthers games (Col. STATE, 8/16).
