FRANCHISE NOTES

In Denver, Steve Caulk writes that Broncos Owner Pat
Bowlen "was flagged for delay of game" in U.S. District
Court yesterday, as Judge Richard Matsch "ordered both sides
of a lawsuit to resume their depositions." Bowlen's
attorneys had "requested" an extension in the depositions in
a lawsuit filed by former team Owner Edgar Kaiser. Kaiser
filed the lawsuit in February, claiming that Bowlen had
"breached the 1984 sale of the team because he had not
provided Kaiser with notice of transfer of ownership
interests in the team" (ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS, 8/11)....In
Detroit, Gene Guidi notes that yesterday's Orioles-Tigers
game -- a matinee at Comerica Park -- drew 40,093 fans, the
second-largest crowd there this season. Tigers Senior Dir
of Marketing & Communications Tyler Barnes said, "Adding
more afternoon games during the week is something we're
definitely considering. ... We didn't schedule that many
this season because we wanted to measure things like parking
availability downtown in the daytime on work days.
Television also was a consideration" (DETROIT FREE PRESS,
8/11)....MIAMI METRO magazine's Steve Dorfman asks, "Why
can't our teams sell out, even when they're winning?"
Dorfman writes that WQAM's Hank Goldberg believes Miami is
an "event town" which "goes crazy over a major happening but
won't support any team (save the beloved Dolphins) over the
course of a long season." SI's E.M. Swift "point[s] to the
high cost" of tickets. More Dorfman: "Throw in our year-
round tropical weather and countless other (cheaper)
entertainment options, and you've got a recipe for empty
     seats" (MIAMI METRO, 8/2000 issue).
