MORE LABOR PAINS FOR AFL? ATTORNEY SAYS NLRB TO FILE MOTION

With the AFL in the "middle of its playoffs, labor
strife is about to take center stage again," according to
Mark Singelais of the Albany TIMES UNION, who cites Mark
Levinstein, an attorney for some AFL players, as saying that
the NLRB is "preparing to issue a complaint against" the
league, charging it with "unfair labor practices."
Levinstein, who represented the players who "initially
sought the charges this past winter," said that NLRB
officials have told him that "they will seek to disband" the
players' union, called the AFLPOC. Levinstein added that
"dissolving" the AFLPOC would "nullify the proposed six-
year" CBA between team owners and the union. AFL
spokesperson David Cooper said that the NLRB "hasn't told
anyone in the league office that a complaint is imminent."
NLRB Deputy Regional Attorney David Cohen added that "no
complaint has been issued," but he "declined to say whether
one is forthcoming" (Albany TIMES UNION, 8/10).
