NOTES: In DC, Dan Daly, on ABC's Tiger Woods-Sergio
Garcia made-for-TV golf match called the "Battle at Bighorn"
on August 28: "Maybe ABC should call it 'Another Sheep to
the Slaughter.'" Daly suggests that instead of Garcia, a
Woods-Karrie Webb matchup would be better: "Think Tiger
wouldn't be a little uptight over the prospect of losing to
a woman?" (WASHINGTON TIMES, 7/27)....In Cincinnati, John
Fay reports that Johnny Bench "has resigned" from WLW-AM's
"Brennaman and Bench on Baseball" show, following
controversy between Bench and co-host Marty Brennaman at
last week's MLB Hall of Fame inductions. The night before
Brennaman was inducted into the HOF, Bench "tried to
pressure Brennaman into omitting Pete Rose from his speech.
Brennaman mentioned Rose anyway." But Brennaman said that
he is "ready to reconcile with Bench" (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER,
7/27)....In Richmond, Jerry Lindquist writes that Fox Sports
"was outfoxed by one of their own this week," after the
network called a conference call to announce Pat Summerall's
retirement, only to have Summerall say that he's not ready
to retire. Lindquist: "Clearly, Fox flacks had been blind-
sided." Lindquist writes that during the conference call,
"confusion led to awkwardness throughout an uncommonly short
Q-and-A with a handful of reporters" (TIMES-DISPATCH, 7/27).
