THE COLOR PURPLE: TENNIS EVENT'S NEW LOOK GRABS ATTENTION

In a move that is "sure to rankle [tennis] purists,"
Tennis Canada has painted the courts at the National Tennis
Centre in Toronto purple for the Tennis Masters Series-
Canada, which starts this week, according to Dave Feschuk of
the NATIONAL POST, who wrote tournament organizers "believe
the new colour lends the event a 'more modern look' that is
'more appealing to the modern fan.'" Tournament Dir Jane
Wynne: "I'm just crossing my fingers that the first few
players to lose are not going to blame it on the violet
courts." Purple was not the organizers' "first choice," as
they "tested shades of pink and blue but found none of those
hues provided the contrast needed to see the yellow ball."
Feschuk added that the Toronto event "will be a trend-setter
of sorts," as a Tennis Masters event in OH next month will
"feature like-coloured courts" (NATIONAL POST, 7/22).
