EVENT NOTES

          A record 24,072 fans attended Sunday's U.S. Olympic
Track & Field Trials in Sacramento, CA (WASHINGTON TIMES,
7/24). In Indianapolis, David Woods writes the Trials'
eight consecutive days of 23,000-plus sellouts "exceeded
expectations" (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 7/24)....In Albany, Fred
LeBrun, on last weekend's inaugural Great Outdoor Games in
Lake Placid: "What in the blazes went on here, and why in
the world should we care?" LeBrun notes it rained "for much
of two days," and crowds were "only three or four thousand a
day." But ESPN Exec Producer Jack Wienert, whose network
taped the Games, said, "We're ecstatic, that's how good we
feel about it." LeBrun: "OK, we'll take his word for it --
until we see the finished product and offer our own.
Weinert seemed to think the footage ESPN got out of these
games is good enough to torque the entire outdoor
entertainment industry ... up a notch" (TIMES UNION, 7/24).
