SPECULATION HAS NCAA MEN'S EARLY ROUND HOOPS HEADED FOR UPN

With both CBS and UPN now under the Viacom umbrella,
some Viacom execs think UPN "could get a boost from reusing
popular CBS programming," including the NCAA men's
basketball tournament, according to Jon Lafayette of
ELECTRONIC MEDIA. One scenario would have UPN air NCAA
games during the early rounds of the tournament, when there
are "too many games for CBS and its affiliates to carry."
Lafayette notes the surplus games used to run on cable, but
that arrangement was discontinued. CBS would sell all the
basketball ad inventory, with UPN "taking a cut for its air
time." Lafayette notes for CBS, the move would probably
"make waves" with affils, and CBS "has been moving very
carefully on repurposing its programming" (E. MEDIA, 7/17).
