"HNIC" EXEC PRODUCER SHANNON OUT: MOVE SAID TO BE MUTUAL

The CBC yesterday decided "not to renew" John Shannon's
contract as Exec Producer of "Hockey Night in Canada,"
according to Dave Fuller of the TORONTO SUN. Shannon had
held the position for the past five years. CBC Sports Exec
Dir Nancy Lee, on the decision: "John had a terrific run.
Now it's time for some new leadership." Former "HNIC"
Producer Larry Isaac, who currently produces weeknight games
for Molstar, is the "early favourite" to replace Shannon.
During his five years with HNIC, Shannon oversaw the debut
of Saturday night doubleheaders. Shannon: "It's a mutual
(parting). Let's leave it at that. We're going to try
greener pastures" (TORONTO SUN, 7/21). In Toronto, Josh
Rubin writes that Lee said that Shannon -- whose "clashes
with bosses and crew were legendary -- had simply been in
charge long enough (six years)." But Shannon "defended his
sometimes stormy tenure." Shannon: "It's one of the great
jobs in this country, and I stand on my record. The show's
in great shape" (TORONTO STAR, 7/21).
