IMS: THE SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL's Andy Bernstein writes
that Indianapolis Motor Speedway "is mulling the sale" of
naming rights to its finish line tower, known as "The
Pagoda." IMS execs said that MCI WorldCom made a ten-year
offer valued at close to $3M annually and that GM "has also
expressed interest" (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 7/17 issue).
NOTES: Team Lambeau Exec Dir David Steffen, head of the
coalition of business leaders supporting a renovated Lambeau
Field, has an "aggressive goal" for a 50% turnout when the
stadium bill goes before Brown County (WI) voters "as
expected" on September 12. Brown County turnout for the '96
presidential election was 56.5% (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL,
7/18)....Vikings Owner Red McCombs said the option of
relocating the franchise "isn't on the radar screen."
McCombs, on momentum toward a new facility: "I don't see
anything cooking out there. I wouldn't say I'm frustrated.
I'd say I'm disappointed" (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 7/18).
....In Charlotte, WBTV's Paul Cameron said "about 80
citizens and business leaders" showed up to voice their
opinions for and against a new arena for the Hornets last
night at a City Council meeting. WBTV's Mike Cozza stated
about 75 people spoke, with "the majority of them" speaking
in favor of the new arena ("News at 11:00," 7/17).
