FACILITY NOTES

In Orlando, Dan Tracy wrote that the Magic are "vastly
improving" their chances of securing a new arena by "winning
over" free agents Grant Hill and Tracy McGrady. Tracy: "The
positive buzz the Magic have created in greater Orlando has
turned apathy on the part of civic leaders into enthusiasm
for the team" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 7/16). RDV Sports Chair
Rich DeVos is in talks with potential partners selling a
minority interest in the Magic as part of a larger deal to
fund construction of a new arena. The minority partner
would "control the arena" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 7/17).
MORE NOTES: In Minneapolis, Dan Barreiro noted the
Vikings' plan to play an exhibition game in San Antonio and
wrote that Vikings Owner Red McCombs is "getting tough" on
the issue of a new stadium. Barreiro: "The tone has
changed. There is an edge now, sharp as a razor blade. We
are about to embark upon a new, more volatile phase."
McCombs: "I have people hive-five me and Purple Pride me,
and then they say, 'Don't move the Vikings.' I say, 'Wait a
minute. I'm not going to move the Vikings. You're going to
move the Vikings'" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 7/15)....Jets
Owner Woody Johnson, on the team's new stadium efforts:
"We're looking at our options for the Jets not to play in
somebody else's stadium, to have a homefield advantage. ...
We're open (to playing in Jersey)" (N.Y. POST, 7/15).
