NAMES IN THE NEWS

          USA TODAY's Kevin Johnson reports in a front-page piece
     that "new charges are imminent" in the investigation into
     alleged vote-buying for the 2002 Salt Lake City Games. The
     charges "could come as early as today and are likely to
     focus on" Salt Lake bid committee leaders TOM WELCH and
     DAVID JOHNSON (USA TODAY, 7/13). In UT, Linda Fantin:
     "Barring any new developments, federal prosecutors are now
     expected to move quickly toward grand jury indictments
     against Welch and Johnson" (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 7/13).
          NAMES: ROBERT WUHL appeared on CBS' "The Early Show"
     this morning and discussed his HBO series "ARLI$$" with Jane
     Clayson.  Wuhl mentioned CBS' BRYANT GUMBEL and MARTINA
     NAVRATILOVA as personalities the show has so far been unable
     to get to appear.  Wuhl, on how "real life agents feel about
     the show": "They love it.  They all think it's them.  Every
     agent I talk to goes, 'I know you think that's me'" ("The
     Early Show," CBS, 7/13)....NBA Commissioner DAVID STERN is
     attending HERB ALLEN's annual "mogulfest" in Sun Valley, ID. 
     While reporters are not invited to the conference, Stern
     "tried to have a sense of humor about it" yesterday, telling
     journalists while walking with his wife, "Oh my God, you're
     not supposed to be here.  I might get arrested just talking
     to you" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 7/13)....USA Networks has pulled
     plans to produce a two-hour docudrama, "THE MARGE SCHOTT
     STORY."  USA Networks Senior VP/Cable Movies ADAM SHAPIRO
     said that the net "could not develop a satisfactory script
     about the controversial" former Reds owner.  Shapiro: "It's
     hard to make her a compelling character" (CINCINNATI
     ENQUIRER, 7/13)....An FBI report has accused Browns
     President CARMEN POLICY of paying $1,000 to "fix a criminal
     case for one of his clients."  Court documents filed Tuesday
     in OH state that Brown paid the money to help TOM O'NESTI, a
     "close friend of mobster" JOSEPH NAPLES.  Policy called the
     accusation "false" (AP, 7/13)....Devils C SCOTT GOMEZ will
     take the Stanley Cup to Anchorage, AK, tomorrow, marking the
     first time the trophy has visited the state (NHL)....Former
     Univ. of AL-Birmingham AD GENE BARTOW talked to the
     BIRMINGHAM NEWS about possibly joining the IBL or ABA 2000. 
     Bartow has talked about becoming part of the ownership group
     of the IBL San Diego Stingrays. Bartow: "It's probably
     pretty closed.  But they're might be something happening in
     the next month or two or three" (BIRMINGHAM NEWS, 7/12).
