NAMES IN THE NEWS

          ROSKI EYES LAS VEGAS HOTEL: The WALL STREET JOURNAL
     reports that Kings co-Owner ED ROSKI "is in talks" with Park
     Place Entertainment CEO ARTHUR GOLDBERG to buy the Las Vegas
     Hilton hotel/casino.  The purchase would be Roski's "first
     venture into big-time gambling" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 7/11).
          WORLD CUP FALLOUT: In London, Grey & Chittenden report
     that Germany secured the 2006 World Cup after German firms
     announced more than $3.02M worth of investment in Asian
     countries. Grey & Chittenden wrote, "In what leaders of the
     rival bidding teams from South Africa and ENGLAND described
     bitterly as a remarkable 'coincidence,' it emerged that a
     series of deals by German multinationals was confirmed in
     the past fortnight in Thailand, South Korea and Saudi
     Arabia.  Their votes helped Germany to its 12-11 victory
     over South Africa" (London TIMES, 7/9).  
          ONE YEAR LATER: '99 Women's World Cup Organization
     Committee President MARLA MESSING, looking back on the one-
     year anniversary of the event: "There are very few
     opportunities in life to create and build something this
     huge.  To watch it unfold the way it unfolded, I don't know
     if I'll ever be a part of something that special again"
     (L.A. DAILY NEWS, 7/10).  On yesterday's "GMA," ABC's Robin
     Roberts interviewed U.S. women's soccer team members MIA
     HAMM, BRANDI CHASTAIN, JULIE FOUDY and KRISTINE LILLY to
     commemorate the anniversary of the team's Women's World Cup
     victory.  Foudy, on what she was thinking before the final:
     "So many people told us, 'No, you'll never sell out.  Don't
     do it in big stadiums.  Don't do it on such a big scale.' 
     And I remember just thinking, 'Yes.  We did it.  We took the
     risk, and God has it paid off'" ("GMA," ABC, 7/10).
     ...Meanwhile, U.S. women's soccer team G SIRI MULLINIX has
     selected Stars & Strategies' SUE RODIN as her marketing
     agent.  Negotiations are underway for endorsements with
     footwear companies and Internet groups (Stars & Strategies).
          OTHER NAMES: Revolution D BRIAN DUNSETH, who will
     captain the U.S. Olympic Soccer Team this fall in Sydney, is
     featured in Cosmopolitan's "All About Men" issue, in the
     "ManHunt" section.  Dunseth: "I'm getting killed by my
     teammates" (BOSTON HERALD, 7/10)....Cubs OF SAMMY SOSA, on
     his support of First Lady HILLARY CLINTON in her bid to
     become U.S. Senator from NY: "Hillary is a great person.  As
     a person, myself, I support Hillary and I support everybody
     that tries to go out there and to do the best they can for,
     specifically, for the city of New York.  I support
     everybody.  I'm not a one man person, I'm everybody.  I have
     time for everybody.  So, hopefully she [can] go up there and
     win and ... make the best of it" ("Up Close," 710)....NBC
     tennis analyst/music enthusiast JOHN MCENROE, asked if he
     would rather be ERIC CLAPTON or himself: "Either one would
     be fine.  Eric Clapton is great, he's a god.  But I prefer
     deep down being an athlete.  I like what I did" (London
     TELEGRAPH, 7/10).
