CARDINALS STADIUM SURVIVES: In Phoenix, Sherwood &
Moeser report that in the closing day of the AZ State
Legislature, supporters of AZ Gov. Jane Hull were about to
"defeat nearly 100 proposed amendments" to her education-
sales tax plan, including one to rescind the referendum on
the November 7 ballot for a $1.8B financing plan to build a
new stadium for the Cardinals (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 6/27).
NOTES: Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory outlined his plan
for a new downtown arena last night and offered his "five
principles to guide Charlotte's negotiations." He said that
the city "should study a ticket tax as a way to raise money
for the project." Among McCrory's suggestions to the city
council was that "no property taxes or car rental taxes
should be used" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 6/27)....A study by two
Univ. of MD-Baltimore County economics professors "concludes
that taxpayer-financed sports stadiums lower per-capita
incomes in their areas." The study examined all 37 cities
that had one or more pro football, baseball or basketball
franchises between '69-96. The article is published in
Regulation, a journal of the Cato Institute in Washington,
DC (USA TODAY, 6/27)....Mercer County, PA, officials, who
are building a 42-acre sports complex, are looking to sell
naming rights to the facility (POST-GAZETTE, 6/26)....A
nationwide survey by Kimberly-Clark Corp. showed that 41% of
respondents say that "dirty, unsanitary conditions" are the
biggest turn-offs of stadium restrooms, while 32% cited the
long lines at stadium restrooms (USA TODAY, 6/27).
