MEDIA NOTES

TV MONITOR: Last night's 10:00pm ET 60-minute edition
of FSN's "National Sports Report" led with Yankees-White
Sox, followed by Tigers-Indians and Red Sox-Blue Jays. The
first non-MLB report, at 9:56 into the broadcast, was Jeff
Gordon winning NASCAR's Save Mart Kragen 350 Winston Cup
race in CA. "NSR" had a 1:08 report on the LPGA Tour's
McDonald's Championship at 12:42 into the broadcast. Last
     night's 11:00pm ET 30-minute edition of CNN/SI's "Sports
Tonight" led with Red Sox-Blue Jays, followed by Yankees-
White Sox and Tigers-Indians. The first non-MLB report, at
7:28, was the Save Mart Kragen 350. "Sports Tonight" had a
1:29 report on the McDonald's Championship at 8:32. Last
     night's 11:00pm ET 60-minute edition of ESPN's
"SportsCenter" led with Red Sox-Blue Jays, followed by
     Yankees-White Sox and Tigers-Indians. The first non-MLB
report, at 10:28, was the Save Mart Kragen 350.
"SportsCenter" had a 1:19 report on the McDonald's
     Championship at 20:57 (THE DAILY).
WEEKEND MEDIA NOTES: In N.Y., Bob Raissman reported
that "after running into access problems" during the Stanley
Cup Finals, The Hockey Writers Association has recommended
to AP Sports Editors that their newspapers "boycott the 2001
NHL All-Star Game if the league's media relations don't
improve by early next season" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 6/25).
...ESPN's Mike Lupica, on NBC's post-game coverage of Game
Six of the NBA Finals: "You couldn't miss [Jack Nicholson]
because he was the second postgame interview NBC did right
after Kobe Bryant. That's pretty much the way they tell you
to go at the Columbia School of Journalism, right? Kobe,
then Jack" ("The Sports Reporters," 6/25)....Former NFL DT
John Jurkovic "is close" to a deal as an announcer for XFL
broadcasts. Jurkovic auditioned for one of the four analyst
openings and "word is the tryout went well" (CBS SportsLine,
6/24)....In Toronto, Chris Zelkovich writes, "Fox's helmet-
cams and umpire-cams can be a bit much, but are quite
effective when used sparingly as they were during
yesterday's NFL Europe championship" (TORONTO STAR, 6/26).
STEPPING UP: USA TODAY's David Lieberman profiles
Speedvision and Outdoor Life Network (OLN), which reach more
than 26 million HHs each. The "public awareness" of the two
nets "is strong enough to make them top candidates for cable
operators who have new channel capacity as they upgrade
their systems and offer digital tiers." Speedvision and OLN
each "should generate" $75M in 2000, and operating income
around $20M, and Founder Roger Werner added that revenue
"should rise" more than 40% per year (USA TODAY, 6/26).
