CART announced Wednesday that it "was not returning" to
Gateway International Raceway (GIR) in MO next year,
according to ESPN's John Kernan. CART also announced that
it was working with Dover Downs Entertainment to pursue
opportunities to develop street races in Atlanta, Boston,
Denver, N.Y., Philadelphia, Phoenix, S.F. and Washington, DC
("RPM 2Night," ESPN2, 6/14). GIR VP & GM Brian Ulione, on
CART's decision: "It's not about the market and not about
the location. They're looking to line up more street races,
and we're an oval track." In St. Louis, John Sonderegger
reports that GIR "hopes to announce" an IRL date for August
2001 "within the next couple of days" (ST. LOUIS POST-
DISPATCH, 6/15). In Indianapolis, Robin Miller writes that
CART has decided to race at TX Motor Speedway (TMS) in 2001.
Miller: "It's not official and CART denied comment, but its
owners voted last week to add a second Texas race next
season." CART has a race in Houston already. The IRL has
signed a five-year extension with TMS, and Miller wrote that
TMS "will be the first track the two open-wheel series have
shared during the same season" (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 6/15).
