NAMES IN THE NEWS

          Devils C SCOTT GOMEZ, D SCOTT STEVENS and LW JAY
     PANDOLFO took the Stanley Cup trophy to the NYSE yesterday
     to ring the closing bell.  CNBC's Ron Insana, after the
     players rang the bell: "I guess they did [that] to the
     Dallas Stars, as well.  They rang their bell" ("Market
     Wrap," 6/13).  Members of the Devils then made an appearance
     on CBS' "Late Show" last night, as Stevens carried the
     Stanley Cup through the studio hall.  DAVID LETTERMAN: "I'm
     no marketing genius, but what about this:   What if we ask
     if they could put the Stanley Cup in the CBS Store for like
     an hour" ("Late Show," CBS, 6/13)....The WNBA permanently
     named its sportsmanship award after late Comets G KIM
     PERROT, who died of cancer in August '99.  WNBA marketing
     partner American General will be the presenting sponsor of
     the KIM PERROT SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD (WNBA)....In Denver, Mike
     Chambers wrote that "judging from" the autograph lines of
     19-year-old IRL driver SARAH FISHER, which have been "much
     longer than any other driver's in her five previous IRL
     races, she has a reputation to uphold.  But she insists her
     wild ride isn't a circus act or public-relations ploy for
     Cummins, her title sponsor."  Fisher: "My age and gender is
     bringing a new crowd of fans to the IRL, and I think that's
     great" (DENVER POST, 6/13)....CHARLES BARKLEY, on Dodgers
     players going into the stands at Wrigley Field in an
     altercation with fans: "I want to commend the Dodgers. 
     Number one, 99.9% of the fans are terrific.  Unfortunately,
     that 1%, we need to go in the stands and beat them down. ...
     Some of these fans are just not good people and they deserve
     to get beat down" ("Last Word," 6/13).
          OTHER NAMES: WBBM-CBS sportscaster TIM WEIGEL, who is
     one of Chicago's "most popular and recognizable sports
     figures," is facing surgery "as early as this weekend" after
     doctors discovered "what appears to be a brain tumor"
     (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 6/14)....In L.A., Larry Stewart reported
     that sports and political "dignitaries" attended Monday's
     funeral service for former sports exec DON KLOSTERMAN, who
     died last Wednesday of heart failure.  Among those
     delivering eulogies were U.S. Senator TED KENNEDY, JACK
     KEMP, BILL WALSH, FRANK GIFFORD and AL MICHAELS.  Others
     attending the service included former CBS Golf Producer
     FRANK CHIRKINIAN, Chiefs Owner LAMAR HUNT and PETE ROZELLE's
     daughter ANN and his brother DICK (L.A. TIMES, 6/13).
     ....76ers President PAT CROCE will receive the Community
     Service Award from the Philadelphia Sports Congress on June
     21.  The award is presented to the "individual, business or
     organization that has done the most to contribute to the
     quality of life in Philadelphia through sports"
     (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 6/14)....In Philadelphia, Michael
     Blowen reviews IRA BERKOW's new book "COURT VISION:
     UNEXPECTED VIEWS ON THE LURE OF BASKETBALL," and writes that
     Berkow "has transformed a collection of celebrated all-stars
     -- in this case, producing a lively, coherent collection
     that not only provides fascinating insights into the game,
     but reveals surprising information about the celebrities"
     (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 6/14)....BRANDWEEK's Terry Lefton
     profiles new CT-based Clarion Sports Marketing Senior VP
     JOHN GRIFFIN, who discussed the company: "We're positioning
     [the company] as a place that can support a lot of different
     client needs, and do a good job with the basic areas of
     matching products to properties and supporting them with
     well-integrated promotional efforts" (BRANDWEEK, 6/12).
