PALM/PGA TOUR REACH DEAL; GREENS.COM SHUTS DOWN OPERATIONS

The PGA Tour has signed handheld organizer manufacturer
Palm Inc. to a five-year sponsorship deal "valued at more
than" $15M in "cash, product and media commitments,"
according to Andy Bernstein of the SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL.
The deal "calls for Palm Vii devices to be used to record
and transmit data" for the Tour's new IBM-powered ShotLink
scoring system, which debuts in 2001 but "will be tested" at
Tour events this year. Palm's sponsorship includes signage,
hospitality and demonstrations at 25 PGA Tour, Senior PGA
Tour and buy.com Tour events (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 6/12).
PICKING UP: GOLF WORLD BUSINESS cited an AZ report that
Greens.com "closed its doors" last Friday and "laid off the
rest of its 120-130 employees." The move "comes a week
after" the company served as presenting sponsor of the LPGA
Tour's Kathy Ireland Greens.com Classic. A source "with
knowledge of the situation" said that Greens.com's assets
"have been turned over" to S.F.-based liquidation firm
Uecker & Associates (GOLF WORLD BUSINESS, 6/12).
