INTERLEAGUE PLAY SEES MILD JUMP FROM '99 ATTENDANCE

Attendance for 125 MLB interleague games played from
June 2-11 drew an average of 32,638 fans, a 2.7% increase
over the "first segment" in '99, which drew 31,788 fans per
game, according to Pete Coates of BLOOMBERG NEWS.
Interleague games have drawn 16.1% more fans than
intraleague games this season. Meanwhile, the 615,377 fans
who attended games on Saturday was the third highest one-day
total in MLB history (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 6/12).
"NUTTY" SCHEDULE: ESPN's Peter Gammons called MLB's
schedule "absolutely nutty." Gammons: "Part of it, is
because they really don't know what they're doing with
realignment. I think part of it is a little bit of a show.
... Part of it to is they're sacrificing the sanctity of the
regular season and the pennant races for this in interleague
     play" ("Baseball Tonight," ESPN, 6/12).
