FRANCHISE NOTES

In his PRO FOOTBALL INSIDER, Fred Edelstein cited
sources who "indicate" Rams President John Shaw has
"rebuffed an overture" from 49ers co-Owner John York to
become 49ers President (PRO FOOTBALL INSIDER, 6/8 issue)
....In Seattle, Ron Judd wrote, "If Microsoft gets split in
half, who really loses? Try the Mariners. And Seahawks.
And Seattle sports in general." Judd added that "cool, hard
cash from Microsoft or the many parasitic software
industries it has spawned" has "fueled the wanton ramping
up" of Seattle's "big-budget sports scene" (SEATTLE TIMES,
6/11). ...Jonathan Alpert, the attorney for the four Bucs
season-ticket holders who "say they were treated unfairly
because they got less desirable seats" when the team moved
to Raymond James Stadium (see THE DAILY, 6/9), announced in
court Friday that "he had asked police to investigate
'threats and/or extortion'" by Bucs attorneys. Alpert said
his clients were "threatened with losing their seats of they
did not agree to a settlement" on the ticket suit (ST.
PETERSBURG TIMES, 6/10)....In Boston, Adrian Walker wrote
that the city should have a WNBA team, but noted that
Celtics officials have said "behind closed doors" that "they
believe" a WNBA franchise "would lose between" $300,000-
500,000 per year, and that "they need partners to make such
a deal work." The Celtics see a WNBA affiliate "as a losing
proposition," even though "free use of the FleetCenter has
been offered" (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/10).....In N.Y., Neal Travis
cites a "rumor" that free agent F Grant Hill will sign with
the Knicks for next season and writes, "Playing in New York
would be worth up to $30 million extra in endorsement
income" for Hill (N.Y. POST, 6/12).
