MLB: In Montreal, Jack Todd, on the progress that Expos
Majority Owner Jeffrey Loria and Exec VP David Samson have
made since purchasing the team: "What is worrying me is that
I don't see a learning curve here. The Labatt naming-deal
disaster, the Irabu trade, the missteps with the TV and
radio contracts, the frayed relationships with the partners.
... I don't see Loria and Samson learning to listen. If
they don't, this game might be over almost before it starts"
(Montreal GAZETTE, 5/26)....In DC, Tunstall & Fisher write
that Orioles Owner Peter Angelos "continues to come under
fire" for his team's "controversial refusal" to sign players
who have defected from Cuba. NC Sen. Jesse Helms (R-NC)
wrote Attorney General Janet Reno and asked for the Justice
Department to "investigate" whether the Orioles "are guilty
of discriminatory hiring practices" (WASHINGTON TIMES,
5/26)....In Minneapolis, Dan Barreiro writes on new Twins
CEO Chris Clouser, who is an old friend of team Owner Carl
Pohlad: "If Pohlad really wanted to get everybody's
attention, he would [have] hired someone whose first
obligation would not be to prove to fans, and more
importantly to legislators, that he was more than a Carl
stooge" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 5/26).
AT NO CHARGE: Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones said that,
unlike the Redskins, his team will not charge for training
camp: "We think a lot of our training camp. We think it's a
unique time and a different time for our fans. But we won't
be doing that" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 5/26). Meanwhile,
Steelers President Dan Rooney said, "I hope we never get to
that point" (Pittsburgh TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 5/26).
