Changes in beer sales and crowd management policies
"could be coming" at Wrigley Field in the aftermath of last
week's brawl between Dodgers players and Cubs fans,
according to Toni Ginnetti of the CHICAGO SUN-TIMES. Two
changes "probably will be" more security staff and a
"stricter policy against stockpiling of beers by fans at
last call" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 5/21)....NEWSDAY's Lawrence
Rocca wrote that "in hopes of minimizing unruly behavior" in
the outfield bleachers at Yankee Stadium, the club has
"banned" the sale and consumption of beer in that section
effective with the next home game Friday. The ban has been
extended from roving vendors, who were "eliminated" last
season from the bleacher section, to fixed concession stands
that service the bleachers. Yankees publicist Jason Zillo
said of the violence and alcohol: "It's eroding our society
as we know it" (NEWSDAY, 5/21).
FROM THE LIP: ESPN's Mike Lupica, on last week's
altercation at Wrigley: "There is fan anger out there and
they're constantly encouraged to be interactive, ... and
there's a level of anger ... about everything that they have
to through to get to the game and everything they have to
pay to get the game" ("The Sports Reporters," ESPN, 5/21).
