The Heat and real estate developer Terremark Worldwide
have teamed to create a telecom center in downtown Miami
"where high-tech companies can rent office space and improve
their Internet connections," according to Sarah Talalay of
the Ft. Lauderdale SUN-SENTINEL. The $100M Technology
Center of the Americas, to be built "within the next 12
months" on land owned by the Heat, is "expected" to generate
500 jobs initially "and perhaps thousands in the future."
Terremark CEO Manny Medina said that the company "wanted to
work with the Heat to help create a center for high-tech
business that will connect Miami with Latin America."
Talalay notes the Center "is just another step in the Heat's
plans to bring businesses and people into" an area that the
team hopes "will someday be a thriving destination" (SUN-
SENTINEL, 5/18). In Miami, De Lollis & Garcia report that
the 700,000-square-foot Center will also host start-up
ventures and technical training. Heat President of Business
Ops Jay Cross: "I would imagine we're the only basketball
team in the second round of the playoffs announcing a real
estate transaction today" (MIAMI HERALD, 5/18).
