NHL TEAM ROUND-UP: CAPS GETTING FASHIONABLE FOR 2000?

CAPITALS: In DC, Eric Fisher writes that the Capitals
will "test" new uniforms later this spring designed by Tommy
Hilfiger, which are "more in keeping with old-style hockey
sweaters" and feature a black and white color scheme with a
red, white and blue eagle crest logo, "somewhat similar to
the current one." The team's current jersey "is one of the
NHL's worst sellers" (WASHINGTON TIMES, 5/12).
FLAMES: After losing Chrysler as a sponsor, Flames
VP/Marketing & Sales Garry MacKenzie said that the team is
"exploring new opportunities in the automotive category."
In Calgary, Maxwell & Van Rassel write that "speculation" is
that the team has talked to GM and Ford Canada about a
sponsorship (CALGARY SUN, 5/12). Meanwhile, the CALGARY
HERALD's David Parker estimates the economic impact of next
month's NHL Draft in Calgary at C$5M and writes that about
3,000 visitors, including 700 league and team officials,
will visit the city for the event (CALGARY HERALD, 5/12).
SENATORS: An Ottawa judge yesterday dismissed the
C$27.5M lawsuit filed by Senators season-ticket holder Len
Potechin against Alexei Yashin for breach of contract. The
judge said that Potechin failed to show "that he had some
form of contractual right" with the team "entitling him to
have Yashin as part of the team roster" (OTTAWA SUN, 5/12).
STARS: In Dallas, Michael Young writes that although
Stars tickets for their Western Conference Final series
against the Avalanche are selling "briskly," there are
"plenty of tickets available." Metro Tickets Owner David
Christopherson: "Last year, I couldn't keep these tickets in
the office. Demand was off the wall. And this year? I
almost want to call it the Dallas Cowboys syndrome: We go to
the Super Bowl one year and we go back the next year, and no
one wants them" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 5/12).
