POLICY HURT BY REPORT: Browns President Carmen Policy
said he was "offended ... deeply" by Will McDonough's story
on Sunday that said "some league owners want him suspended"
over allegations that the 49ers violated the salary cap
while he was team President (see THE DAILY, 4/26). Policy
said that the NFL's investigation of the matter "will find
no wrongdoing." Policy: "The tone of the article was
totally unfair. ... Nothing I did was intended to avoid the
salary cap. And even if there were some form of technical
violation found by some interpretation [of the CBA] ... I'm
stating that it did not have any significant competitive
ramifications connected to it" (AKRON BEACON JOURNAL, 4/27).
NET REPORT: RDV Sports VP Julius Erving, on reports
that he was "about to become" an exec with the Nets: "It's
so strange. It's very unfair to my company, very unfair to
me. If it were true, I certainly would have talked to them
first" (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 4/27).
A SHORT FUS-ION IN MIAMI? MLS Commissioner Don Garber,
noting that the Fusion's "poor attendance" is one of the
"top five" issues confronting MLS: "At some point, you've
really got to question how hard you can bang your head
against the wall and not get the results you're looking
for." Fusion VP/GM Doug Hamilton, on the Fusion in South
FL: "I don't think anybody in MLS really appreciated how
difficult this market would be" (PALM BEACH POST, 4/23).
ELWAY'S DRIVE: John Elway, asked if he would pursue an
ownership stake in the Broncos after his failed bid for the
Avalanche, Nuggets and Pepsi Center: "I think there's really
not any room for me there. I don't know what I'd do there."
In Denver, Sam Adams writes, "It's obvious that Elway wants
to have an active role for whatever franchise he would be
involved with" (ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS, 4/27).
