LONGTIME NFL ATTORNEY FRANK ROTHMAN DIES AT THE AGE OF 73

Renowned sports attorney FRANK ROTHMAN, who had handled
lawsuits involving the NFL, NBA, and the PGA Tour, died
yesterday at the age of 73. Rothman "litigated a number of
landmark cases, including one involving basketball player
SPENCER HAYWOOD that led to the 'hardship rule,' which
allows undergraduates to leave college before four years and
play in the NBA." In the late '80s, Rothman joined the firm
of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, where he was the
NFL's lead attorney for more than a decade. He represented
the league in a number of high-profile suits, including an
antitrust claim brought by the USFL, in which Rothman scored
"a significant victory for the NFL" (L.A. TIMES, 4/26).
