THE ISLES ON HOPE: COMPUTER ASSOCIATES SET TO BUY TEAM

Long Island-based Computer Associates Int'l CEO Charles
Wang & COO Sanjay Kumar yesterday "finally completed the
nearly" $180M purchase of the Islanders, pending NHL
approval, in a deal that was agreed upon in principle
earlier this month, according to Peter Botte of the N.Y.
DAILY NEWS. Wang and Kumar were to be introduced at a press
conference this morning as the team's fourth ownership group
in five years, and Botte writes the sale "at least gives
hope that the Islanders could be a viable professional
sports franchise" for the first time since they captured
four consecutive Stanley Cups from '80-83 (N.Y. DAILY NEWS,
4/26). NEWSDAY's Hahn & Young write that the agreement is
for $190M. A source "familiar with the deal" indicates that
the deal "does not include plans for" a new arena or lease
with Nassau Coliseum landlord SMG, but the deal "is
considered the first step toward replacing the Coliseum and
renegotiating" a lease with SMG (NEWSDAY, 4/26).
