CHARGERS CONTINUE TO CLARIFY TALK ON A NEW STADIUM

Chargers Owner Alex Spanos "caused a firestorm of
controversy" when he said this week that the team needs a
new stadium, and yesterday, team President Dean Spanos
acknowledged that Chargers execs "had discussed internally
the possible need for a new stadium, but said that depends
on the economics" of the NFL, according to Jim Trotter of
the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. Dean Spanos: "At this time
we're not asking for a new stadium. And we don't have any
expectations of using taxpayer money on something like that,
not with this political climate." Spanos also called
speculation that the team "might be headed" for L.A.
     "ludicrous" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 3/31). One L.A.
government source familiar with efforts to bring the NFL to
L.A. said, "Spanos definitely could be testing the waters.
And he has possibly the most attractive product of any
[team] possibility here. Who could sell the most tickets
here? The Chargers" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 3/29).
