TORONTO REPORT HAS ROGERS COMMUNICATIONS ACQUIRING SPORTSNET

Rogers Communications "will announce shortly" that it
has purchased sports cable channel CTV Sportsnet, according
to William Houston of the Toronto GLOBE & MAIL. Sources say
that the deal will include the "participation of the CBC" as
a partner in providing production facilities, staff and
studio space. Sportsnet "was put in play" as a result of
the Canadian Radio-TV and Telecom Commission ruling that CTV
had to divest the channel as a condition of acquiring TSN.
Rogers, a minority shareholder in Sportsnet with 29.9%, had
the right of first refusal on a deal (GLOBE & MAIL, 3/30).
