SQUASH IT: TOTAL DENIAL OF SPORTSLINE'S ACQUISITION

Raleigh-based Total Sports "is trying to squash
persistent reports" that it has been negotiating a sale to
SportsLine.com, while maintaining that its IPO "will take
place this year," according to Karin Schill of the Raleigh
NEWS & OBSERVER. Total Sports' "top managers" responded to
reports earlier this week with an e-mail message to "more
than 200 worried employees, denying" that the company "was
being shopped." Total Sports Founder Frank Daniels declined
comment, but a SportsLine spokesperson said that SportsLine
"wouldn't discuss pending acquisitions except to say that
any reports that SportsLine is buying Total Sports are
'completely in error.'" Phil Leigh, an Internet researcher
who "follows" SportsLine for Raymond James, cited "reliable
sources" as saying talks were done. Leigh: "This deal is
not going to happen" (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 3/29).
