OUT WITH THE NEW: BYU TOLD TO DITCH BIBS ON HOME UNIFORMS

          New NCAA legislation has forced Brigham Young Univ.
     (BYU) to get rid of the white swatches of fabric on the
     front of their home football uniforms -- known as "bibs" --
     for the 2000 season, according to Jeff Call of the DESERET
     NEWS.  BYU AD Val Hale: "The legislation prohibits white on
     the home jersey, with the exception of the player's number. 
     That eliminates the bibs."  BYU debuted the Nike-designed
     uniforms last season, but many fans "expressed their
     aversion to the brash fashion statement."  BYU LB Justin
     Ena: "They were voted, what, the ugliest or second ugliest
     uniforms in the country?  We didn't mind them.  But we'll
     proudly comply with the NCAA."  Also, several BYU opponents
     "complained" that the white bibs "caused confusion as they
     blended with the visiting team's white tops."  Nike will
     again create the new home uniforms (DESERET NEWS, 3/28).
