ESPN presented its second installment of "NHL Rules!"
during last night's Mighty Ducks-Avalanche game, and opening
the broadcast, ESPN's Bill Clement said, "We will attempt to
define rules, but besides that, we want to endeavor to
educate. ... So folks, if you're watching tonight, you might
not end up with a masters degree, but we will at least
endeavor to give you a start towards the degree." NHL Dir
of Officials Bryan Lewis joined ESPN's Clement and Darren
Pang in the broadcast booth and helped explain penalty calls
and discuss the rules of the game. Several times during the
game, viewers were instructed to log-on to ESPN.com and
NHL.com to e-mail questions and participate in the online
chats. Throughout the game, Pang and Clement answered at
least ten of the over 13,000 questions e-mailed to ESPN.com.
Video was presented to explain various hockey terms,
including: boarding, wraparound, two-on-one, five hole,
forechecking, change on the fly, slap shot and plus/minus.
Game refs also wore mics for audio action (ESPN, 3/14).
