Duke men's basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski said
yesterday that the school "is studying the possibility of
expanding" 9,314-seat Cameron Indoor Stadium and "adding
luxury suites," according to Gregg Doyel of the CHARLOTTE
OBSERVER. Krzyzewski: "I'd like to see us look at the
seating to see if that's possible. But not to hurt or
change the way the students are seated. They should always
get those (courtside) seats. Maybe there's one side of
Cameron ... that could be pushed back a little and more
seats could be added there." The 60-year-old arena was last
expanded by 750 seats in '88. More Krzyzewski, who said
that he doesn't want the arena to "lose its identity": "It's
a place that has a soul, and I don't want to mess with
that." Krzyzewski added that funds are "being raised" for
the potential expansion (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 1/26).
WOLFPACK MARKETING ATTACK: In Raleigh, NC State Univ.
Senior AD Barbara Lehner is profiled by Amanda Strickland of
the RALEIGH BUSINESS JOURNAL, who writes that Lehner was
hired by Wolfpack Sports Marketing to "solely promote" the
women's basketball team. Lehner has secured a $20,000
sponsorship with Winn-Dixie, partnered with Glaxo Wellcome
for coach Kay Yow's 25th anniversary with the team and has
increased attendance by "nearly" 50% over last year. The
school hopes to increase its corporate sponsorship revenue
to around $200,000 by next year (RAL. BUS. JOURNAL, 1/24).
NCAA BUZZER BEATER: The NCAA men's and women's rules
committees passed a ruling yesterday that allows officials
to use courtside replay equipment or TV monitors when
deciding whether to allow or disallow a last-second, game-
determining basket. The ruling will become effective on
Friday (NCAA).
NCAA PLAYOFF? Swiss-based ISL sent a ten-year, $2.5B
proposal to establish a national college football playoff to
"some 500" Division I-A university presidents, ADs, coaches
and conference commissioners. It would feature eight teams
in four BCS games, with the four winners advancing to a
three-game playoff to determine the national champion. ISL
VP/Collegiate Athletics Jim Wheeler, on the proposal: "It's
really just the BCS extended. I think it's much more
palatable to a lot of people" (USA TODAY, 1/25).
