NCAA COUNTING ON PATERNO, SMITH TO OUTLAW COLLEGE BETTING

The NCAA is "counting on the support" of former Univ.
of NC men's basketball coach Dean Smith and Penn State Univ.
football coach Joe Paterno in its campaign "to outlaw
betting on college sports," according to sources of Jeff
German of the LAS VEGAS SUN. Sources added that Smith and
Paterno "have been invited" to a news conference Wednesday
on Capitol Hill to announce the "introduction of a betting
ban" bill "aimed at" NV's "$2.3 billion-a-year sports
betting industry." Wayne Mehl, a DC lobbyist for the Nevada
Resort Association, on Smith and Paterno's presence:
"They're [NCAA] bringing out the big guns." But DC-based
American Gaming President Frank Fahrenkopf said that he
"doesn't believe support from big-name university coaches
and presidents will hurt the industry's stance" against the
bill. Fahrenkopf: "The college coaches and presidents can
just reinforce the fact that there's a college gambling
     problem" (LAS VEGAS SUN, 1/24).
