A CHANGE WILL DO THEM GOOD? OWNERS UNSURE ABOUT NEW TV PLAN

It is "uncertain" if NFL team owners "will approve" the
league's proposal to "wait until late in the season to
decide" the matchups for the final four "MNF" games,
according to Vito Stellino of the Baltimore SUN (see THE
DAILY, 1/21). Ravens Owner Art Modell said that he "has
doubts about the idea." Modell: "I'm not crazy about it.
It would be a tough one to put over. It's a very creative
plan, but there are a lot more problems in it than people
realize. It's worthy of further study and examination, but
at first blush, I don't think it'll work." Modell pointed
out there are "a lot of logistical problems" in arranging
travel and hotel reservations late in the year. But NFL
Senior VP/Broadcasting and Network TV Dennis Lewin said that
he "hasn't gotten much feedback from the owners" concerning
the idea, and he plans to "talk to some of them at the Super
Bowl." Lewin also said that the Sunday night and Saturday
games late in the season "would continue to be scheduled
ahead of time." Stellino wrote that league officials "would
have to decide by February whether there is enough support
to go ahead with the plan" (Baltimore SUN, 1/22).
